As applications grow more and more complex, there are many things that can be customized by users. Most people configure their browsers, word processors, OS desktops to match their taste and habits. Then it's annoying to work on an other desktop, where the program is configured in a different way.

Emacs users have been carrying around their config-files for a long time, but for other programs it's not always obvious in which files are the settings stored. There could be a mechanism for updating settings, once the user logs in on a web page, where his personal application configurations are stored, similarly to how luxury cars adjust seat position and temperature, depending on which key was used to open the door.

Web applications have this persistence of settings by default, but this could be retrofitted to desktop apps as well.
