3d mouse [more ideas]

ok, this one will be stranger. A usable 3d mouse has been the holy grail of CAD developers ever since, well, the 2d mouse. Most approaches I've seen actually make the pointing device movable in space, which would be pretty tiring for the arm 8 hours a day. An actual design by Neil Fraser is here.
My idea is to somehow use the shape obtained by the intersection of three cylinders as pointing device. This can be precisely rotated along one particular axis, of course this motion also has to be detected somehow... well, I never said it was a good idea...
